Yes. In Louisiana, home improvement work over $7,500 needs a license or registration from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC). A Home Improvement Registration covers $7,500 to $50,000, but the Board’s guide says that registrant “shall not perform any structural or roofing work,” so a foundation contractor should hold a residential or commercial license. Look up the number before you sign.

Why a foundation job usually isn’t a “registration” job
Louisiana lowered its residential threshold from $75,000 to $50,000 with Act 178 of 2024, effective Aug. 1, 2024, according to the legislative digest (Louisiana Legislature, SB 392). The more important change for homeowners is the structural limit. The LSLBC’s licensing guide states that a Home Improvement contractor “shall not perform any structural or roofing work.” Piers, pilings, beams and slab lifts are structural. So on a typical $6,000-$18,000 foundation repair, ask the contractor which license they hold and which classification covers the work. If the answer is only “home improvement registration,” call the Board at 225-765-2301 before signing. The classification that covers raising and leveling
On the commercial side, the LSLBC’s “Foundations and Pile Driving” classification — a subclassification of Heavy Construction — covers piles, pressure grouting and “all other types of deep and shallow foundations,” and explicitly “allows a contractor to raise and level buildings and houses.” For large or commercial jobs, ask whether the contractor holds it.
A five-minute check before you sign
- Ask for the number. A registered contractor will give you their LSLBC registration or license number without hesitation. It should be printed on the contract.
- Look it up. Use the license search on the LSLBC website. Confirm the business name matches and the status is active.
- Check insurance. Ask for a certificate of general liability and, if they have employees, workers’ comp. Since Aug. 1, 2026, residential and home improvement contractors must carry at least $500,000 in liability coverage (see Louisiana’s new contractor insurance requirements).
- Get it in writing. Scope, piling count, unit prices, payment schedule and any warranty terms.
- Watch the deposit. Be cautious of large upfront payments before work starts.
Permits
Structural modifications in Baton Rouge generally require a permit from the City-Parish Permit and Inspection Division. Foundation and pier replacement usually count. A contractor should know the requirement for your parish and include it in the scope. Other parishes — Livingston, Ascension, West Baton Rouge, Iberville — have their own permit offices.
