Why foundations move in Plaquemine
Plaquemine was settled in 1775 and incorporated in 1838 at the junction of Bayou Plaquemine and the Mississippi, which makes it one of the oldest towns in our service area. Its Main Street district has been a Louisiana Main Street community since 1993, with ten properties on the National Register, and the 1895–1909 Plaquemine Lock — a prototype for the Panama Canal locks — still stands at the riverfront. A lot of the town's housing is correspondingly old: raised homes on brick or masonry piers with wood sills and beams, many of them a century old or more.
Those houses need careful work. Brick piers tilt and lose mortar; sills rot where crawl-space humidity and splash-back reach them; decades of small movements leave floors sloping toward a wall. We replace failing brick piers with concrete piers on footings, cut out rotted sill sections and replace them with treated lumber, and re-level gradually on steel shims so old plaster and trim aren't damaged. Newer slab homes on the town's edges, where the siltier ground near the levee gives way to heavier alluvial clay, get the pressed-piling approach used across the west bank.
