Prairieville is one of the fastest-growing communities in Louisiana: the 2020 census counted 33,197 residents, up about 23 percent in a decade, and the area was only listed as a census-designated place in 2010. Its name comes from the open pastures and prairies once visible from Highway 73. Almost all of that open ground has since become subdivisions — Manchac Place, Bluff Meadows, Arlington Plantation, Country Ridge and dozens more — and nearly every house in them sits on a slab, most of them post-tension slabs poured on fill pads.

That combination explains most Prairieville foundation calls. The native soils are clays laid down by the Mississippi and Amite systems, and they swell when wet and shrink when dry. Builders raise lots with fill to get above flood elevation, and when that fill isn't compacted evenly it keeps settling for years — most at garage corners and wherever it was placed deepest. Post-tension slabs are stiff, so instead of cracking all over they tend to tilt as a unit toward the low side, showing up as cracks at door corners, tile cracking in a line and doors that won't latch.

Water is the other half of the story. Bayou Manchac forms Prairieville's northern edge and the Amite runs to the east, and both backed up in August 2016, when about a third of Ascension Parish homes took water. Lots here are flat, so a downspout discharging at a slab corner or a yard graded toward the house keeps that side wet for days after a storm. For most Prairieville homes the fix is exterior pressed pilings along the low side plus buried downspout lines and regrading.
