Walker grew up around a War of 1812 land grant and a post office called Milton Old Field, took its present name in 1890, and only became a city in 2011 — by which point I-12 had turned it into one of Livingston Parish's commuter towns, about 20 miles east of Baton Rouge. Most homes here are slab-on-grade houses built on flat ground near the Amite basin, many on fill pads raised above the surrounding lots.
