Port Allen sits on the west bank of the Mississippi, directly across from downtown Baton Rouge, and it was built on the river's own deposits. Near the levee, the ground is the siltier soil of the natural levee; moving away from the river it grades into heavy backswamp clays of the kind the USDA soil survey describes as 60 to 90 percent clay, cracking 1 to 3 centimeters wide and 20 inches or more deep in dry years. That is about as active as foundation soil gets in this region, and it's why west-bank slabs can show larger seasonal movement than homes on the terraces east of the river.
