Why foundations move in Baker
Baker sits just north of Baton Rouge along LA 19 and Plank Road, bordered by Zachary to the north. Named in 1888 for an early settler, it grew through the mid-20th century and a large share of its housing is brick-veneer slab ranches from that era. Those homes have conventionally reinforced slabs — no post-tension tendons — which respond well to pressed concrete pilings, and they often still have original cast-iron drain lines under the slab, which we recommend testing before any lift.
Baker also sits a few miles north of the mapped trace of the Denham Springs–Scotlandville fault, which the Louisiana Geological Survey traced through north Baton Rouge along Crown Avenue, Winchester Avenue and near Glen Oaks High School, where survey markers moved about four inches between 1960 and 1970. Most Baker homes are well away from the trace, and the usual cause of cracks here is ordinary settlement and seasonal clay movement. But because fault movement can't be fixed with pilings, we check for its signature — cracks aligned in one direction across slab, driveway and street, and consistent 45-degree brick cracks — before we recommend anything.
