St. Francisville, the West Feliciana Parish seat, was established in 1807 on a narrow ridge above the Mississippi — briefly the capital of the Republic of West Florida in 1810 — and it is the most historic town in our service area, surrounded by Rosedown, the Myrtles, Butler Greenwood and the Audubon State Historic Site. At about 148 feet, it also sits on very different ground from the rest of the Capital Region: the loess bluffs and Tunica Hills country, where wind-deposited silt blankets the uplands, as the LSU AgCenter notes for East and West Feliciana.

Loess stands in steep bluffs when dry but erodes readily and loses strength when saturated, so drainage around a house here matters as much as it does in the low country, for a different reason: concentrated runoff cuts channels and undermines footings and piers. Much of the town's housing is historic and raised, which calls for the most careful kind of work — gradual re-leveling on steel shims, concrete piers replacing failed brick ones, and sill repair — without harming original plaster and millwork. St. Francisville is about 35 miles from our base via US 61.
