St. Gabriel lies on the east bank of the Mississippi about 12 miles south of Baton Rouge, with Bayou Manchac forming its boundary with Ascension and East Baton Rouge parishes. The parish dates to 1769, when Acadian settlers established it, but the city itself only incorporated in 1994.
